PAUL KERES, 1916 - 1975
 
Paul Keres was born in Narva on 7 January 1916. At the University of Tartu, he studied mathematics from 1938 to 1941. Paul Keres first appeared in the international chess arena in the mid-1930s, and remained a prominent figure there for years. By the end of 1950s, he was one of the strongest chess players in the world. In 1975, the great Estonian grandmaster Paul Keres died suddenly at the age of 59.

ESS KALEV Paul Keres Memorial

Traditional rapid tournament will be held January 9-11 in two steps : preliminary tournament with 7 rounds swiss system January 9-10 (groups A and B) and the finals, which be held in 8 players round-robin for men and women separately.

Final tournament's invited players are not known yet. Last year played Nigel Short, Alexey Dreev, Vladimir Malakhov, Inna Gaponenko, Viktoria Cmylite, Ilse Berzina, ...

Tournament will be held in ESS Kalev Sport Hall (Pärnu mnt 41). There will be also LIVE games transmission in our games section.

LIVE games transmissions

We will show LIVE games from Paul Keres Memorial men and women final tournaments. Probably also first tables for preliminary tournaments and additionally during tests on January 8th tournaments.

Estonian Youth Open Championship

This is a open tournament for young players (until U-18), where first 20 boys and 15 girls will get the tickets to closed Estonian U-16 and U-18 championships. Usually also our neighbour countries participate in that tournament. First three rounds are in rapid and last four in classical time control.

Tournament will be held in Paul Keres Chess House (Vene tn 29) on January 3-5.

Schools Cup Tournament

A schools team tournament with four players in each team.

Event will be held January 8 in ESS Kalev Sport Hall (Pärnu mnt 41).

Company Sport Chess Championship

Swiss 7 rounds rapid tournament with time control 15 + 15 minutes. All who work in some company may participant.

Tournament will be held January 8 on 2009, beginning at 16:00 in Tallinn, in ESS Kalev Sport Hall (Pärnu mnt 41).
